Band of Hawks Set the Tone for a Powerful Season Ahead

This summer, while most students enjoy a well-earned break, the LaRue County High School Marching Band has been hard at work—preparing to make this year one of their most exciting seasons yet.

“The majority of our seasonal work happens over the summer,” says Band Director Taylor Cook. “We begin with a one-week June Camp that introduces students to the visual techniques, musical concepts, and physical preparation needed for the fall.”

After a short break, the band returns for two weeks of intensive band camp, where they begin learning their show. During these eight-hour days, students and staff focus on everything from choreography to musical precision. This high level of preparation reflects the culture of excellence that defines the Band of Hawks.

In total, this year’s marching program will include about 65–70 student performers supported by a professional team of 22–25 staff members. That team includes directors, color guard and percussion staff, music and visual instructors, a drill writer, sound designers, and several guest clinicians. Behind the scenes, parents and volunteers also play a crucial role in making each rehearsal and performance possible.

“Our vision is to continually improve in everything we do,” Cook shares. “We’re focused on growing the program while continuing the strong tradition and reputation the Band of Hawks has earned.”

That growth is on full display this year, as the band prepares to compete in two national-level events: the Bands of America Central Ohio Regional on September 27 in Columbus, and the Grand National Championships on November 14 in Indianapolis. This marks the first time the Band of Hawks has competed at Grand Nationals since 2009.

Show details remain under wraps until the week of September 1, but excitement is already building across the program and community.

At LaRue County Schools, we’re proud to support this hardworking group of students and staff who lead with passion, discipline, and heart. This fall, we invite everyone to come out, cheer them on, and be part of something extraordinary.
