Schools Pilot Innovative "Defense of Learning" Initiative as Part of Learner Profile Program

For the last several years, LaRue County Schools has embarked on a journey to create a Learner Profile. The goal was to holistically support each student and set them up for the best possible future outside of the classroom. The latest phase, aptly named the Defense of Learning, marks a significant milestone in this educational evolution.

The Defense of Learning phase represents the culmination of various components within the Learner Profile framework. Positioned as the focal point of the initiative, it’s expected to showcase how students have grown over the course of the year.

“When I consider the long-term benefit of the Learner Profile, the Defense of Learning is the showcase of who our students are,” said David Raleigh, Superintendent of LaRue County Schools. “In the students who participated this year as part of the pilot program, it was incredible to witness firsthand how they have grown over the last year. Most importantly, in their presentations, students were able to showcase all the parts of their lives. They are not just academic test scores - this is the embodiment of our strategic plan, educating the whole child.”

The Defense of Learning showcased participation from students across various grade levels, from 3rd grade through high school. The format of presentations varied according to the age group. Elementary, middle and high school students presented their progress in the five competencies of the Learner Profile to a panel comprising teachers, building-level, and district-level administrators. Some elementary school students additionally curated slide presentations, sharing their journey with family members during intimate evening events.

“While this program is still in its early stages, our community would be so proud to see how our students were able to show evidence of their learning in and well beyond the classroom,” said Amanda Reed, Assistant Superintendent of LaRue County Schools.

As LaRue County Schools continues to refine and expand the Learner Profile initiative, the Defense of Learning represents innovative, community-driven education, signaling a paradigm shift towards holistic education tailored to the needs of every student.
