Introducing the New Learner Profile Webpage

Over the last year, the LaRue County Learner Profile has journeyed from idea to early stages of implementation in classrooms across the district. Between ideation to implementation were many months of discussion among community and school representatives, meeting to form what the community was asking for in terms of answering the question: what should a graduate from LaRue County High School be equipped with?

While the Learner Profile is larger than that single question, it allows LaRue County, here at the local level, to shape the student experience. Through input from the group comprised of community and school volunteers, the five competencies are Collaborative Communicator, Resilient Problem Solver, Responsible Individual, Life-Long Learner, and Engaged Citizen.

This week, another significant step has been taken to continue informing the community of how these five core competencies look in the classroom: The LaRue County Learner Profile web page. The page comprises an introduction section, discussing how the Learner Profile came to be and is punctuated by the final document in a printable poster form. Below that initial section, community members can begin digging into what the five areas are and how they function in the classroom.

Several members of the LaRue County Schools staff highlight individual sections of the page including Traci Weaver, Jim Phelps, Nikki Waldeck, Missy Flanders, Abby Lee, Amanda Reed, and David Raleigh. These individuals describe each of the sections respectively in a short two-minute or less video discussing the details of the competencies and ways students can understand them at different grade levels.

Finally, in each section are links to examples of the five competencies being integrated into the classroom. Community members can see how teachers across the district are, for example, implementing project-based learning on being a responsible individual or resilient problem solver.

The unique advantage of the Learner Profile is the ability for LaRue County Schools to hear input from the community on what they would like for students to embody in characteristics upon graduation and then see it implemented from the earliest days of our youngest Hawks’ time in the classroom. This webpage not only tells the story of the Learner Profile but goes the next step and shows the community how their voice is helping shape students’ education in the classroom as we all take an active role towards investing in the next generation.
