Art Imitates Life at POCS
Preschoolers as a group are often known for many things, including their love of play, curiosity, openness to learning, and creativity. While these are all a regular part of each school day at Preschool On College Street (POCS), on May 9 from 5-6:30, the school will be hosting an art show with a family art night to follow.
Parent involvement is a high priority for Karen Ward, principal at POCS. “When parents get involved in their child’s education, it improves their overall experience. It goes beyond the initial benefit of spending time with their child and develops something even deeper - an understanding that education is something that is valued in their family.”
Teachers and administrators in Kindergarten and above share the same sentiment. Fall/Spring festivals at Hodgenville Elementary School and Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, literacy nights at LaRue County Middle School and LaRue County High School all share the mission of promoting parent involvement in every stage of a student’s education at LaRue County Schools.
In preparation for the art night at POCS, Ward says students have been hard at work, “In our current unit of learning, we’ve been studying artists and their specific style of art. Each classroom focused on a specific artist to create their own art in that artist's style. Our students will have the opportunity to share their creations at the Art Show.”
But even children aged 3-5 in the community who are not students at POCS will have the opportunity to participate in events that evening. Accompanying the art show will be a family community event where children and their families can engage in a learning activity about art and artists.
For Ward, the wonder of an event like this is not in the specifics of the art on display but rather what it represents: “Our preschool students are learning a valuable life lesson in preparation for their art show, namely that art tells a story. The story being told on May 9 is that parents can show their children how much they value their child's education and efforts within the classroom by coming to their art show and supporting all of their hard work.”
In this way, art imitates life and tells a story as old as time itself - sometimes the best way to spell “love” is “t-i-m-e”.
