School District Invites Community to Collaborate on Profile of a Learner
The LaRue County School District is looking to bring the community into the classroom thanks to a new initiative. The ‘Profile of a Learner’ program brings LaRue Countians into the conversation of what knowledge, skills and dispositions are needed for students to become successful citizens. The school district hopes that by developing a common purpose, the community would benefit even further from the bright minds in its schools.
The school and community relationship is one essential to exceptional education. Communities that invest in their school systems often have higher retention and graduation rates, higher attendance, and higher grades. Students who find support from their communities return the favor. Alumni are more likely to return to an environment where they felt supported, investing in solutions to solve community problems.
The community input will be broken down into the different age groups as well to form a single profile of a learner. The Profile of a Learner will be appropriately applied to elementary, middle school and high school students. The profile will also set achievement goals and guidelines on how to communicate that success to the community.
While this Profile of a Learner program is getting started, it all starts with the community and the school coming together to define the desired future for LaRue County’s students.
Where LaRue County Stands
For some context on the opportunity for improvement, the 2022 state accountability data for LaRue County Schools was released recently. Out of Kentucky’s 172 school districts, LaRue ranked 38thin elementary, 28thin middle, and 33rdin high schools. Among the 16 districts in the area, LaRue was 2ndin elementary and high and 1stin middle school results.
“We are proud of this accomplishment and what it means for our students, however, we also know that the current state accountability system is heavily weighted towards standardized tests,” said LaRue County Schools District Assessment Coordinator Amanda Reed.
“Kentucky’s tests are rigorous and comprehensive of challenging academic standards, however, academic skills are not the only skills necessary to be successful in life. We are committed to teaching the whole child.”
How to Get Involved
The school district is hosting nine sessions in December to give the community the opportunity to join in exploring a Learner Profile. Sessions will be interactive and open to community members including: parents, students, staff, businesses, industry, government, and more.
“Our hope in providing sessions at various times of day is to allow as many stakeholders as possible to participate,” Reed said.
